Paperback: 272 pages
Publisher: Simon & Schuster; Reprint edition (July 13, 2010)
ISBN-10: 1439104999
ISBN-13: 978-1439104996

Annotation/Flashtalk: Could you live without telling a lie for 30 days? How hard is it to focus on just one task at a time? Can you successfully outsource an argument with your spouse?

Summary:
A.J. Jacobs is up to it again, this time instead of one big experiment, like his "The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible" or "The Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World," this time he does a series of 30-day experiments.  A.J. takes on:
  • Radical Honesty
  • Living like George Washington
  • Outsourcing his life
  • Walking the Red Carpet
  • Trying to be totally rational and remove bias from his life
  • Being a unitasker and focusing on one task at a time
  • Using his writing skills to get his nanny a date
  • Posing naked for Esquire
  • And for his "saintly" wife Julie, a month doing EVERYTHING she asks.
Jacobs writes of his "experiments" with his usual humor, insight, and journalistic approach that readers of his previous work have come to expect.

Annotation/Flashtalk: "Congratulations, you've been chosen to act as Death. It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it."

Summary:
The birth of your first child is supposed to be one of the highlights of your life; however, for Charlie Ascher, a mild-mannered beta-male, and second-hand store owner the day turns out to be so much more.  Charlie's wife Rachel dies shortly after childbirth, and Charlie sees a tall black man in a mint green suit by her bedside -- but no one else sees him.  The man turns out to be Minty Fresh, a soul-collector, or as Minty like to say - "death merchants."

Charlie is coping with his grief and raising his daughter, Sophie, with the help of his sister and his neighbors, when strange things start to happen to him.  People start to die and objects near them begin to glow red.  Sophie begins to exhibit some unusual traits -- killing people by uttering the word "Kitty", and a very unlucky streak with pets, that is until she finds herself protected by two (big, like bear) hell hounds.  Minty steps in to help Charlie understand his new responsibility.

In his new role, Charlie is tasked with collecting soul vessels of those people who passed, and then keeping them in his shop (which is the perfect cover for a death merchant) until the new owner comes in to buy it. He must strictly adhere to the names and dates that start showing up in his death datebook; for if he doesn't the underworld can take over.  As the story unfolds, the demons of the underworld, or in this case the San Francisco's sewers, start to get restless. Charlie and Minty, with the help of a police detective and Charlie's employee Lily work to keep the balance in order.

ISBN-10: 0385523211

Annotation/Flashtalk:
As one, the bonobos turned to face the hallway. Isabel looked from face to face, puzzled. "What? What is it?" VISITOR, signed Bonzi. The rest of the apes remained motionless, their eyes trained on the door. "No, not a visitor. The visitors left," said Isabel.  The apes continued to stare down the hallway. Sam's hair rose until it stood on end, and a pricking like tiny spiders crept over Isabel's scalp…The rustling stopped, but all eyes—human and ape—remained on the hallway. Sam's nostrils flared. He turned to Isabel and signed urgently, VISITOR, SMOKE….In eight years of daily contact, she'd never seen the bonobos behave like this. Their adrenalin was contagious….The thunderous explosion blasted the door entirely out of its frame. As it carried her backward, she processed that she and the door were being propelled down the hall by a billowing, rolling wall of fire….Shadowy figures in black clothes and balaclavas swarmed in and spread out, strangely, frighteningly silent. Crowbars swung and glass flew, but the people didn't speak.

Summary:
Scientist Isabel Duncan has been raising a family of bonobo apes as part of the Great Ape Language Lab. These incredible apes have acquired the ability to communicate with humans via a computer and American Sign Language (ASL). They have become like family to Isabel. Late one night the apes sense “Bad Strangers” in the lab and start frantically signing to Isabel – and then the explosion! When Isabel wakes up in the hospital, she finds out her beloved apes have been sold and she fears for their safety.

Once out of the hospital, Isabel begins the task of trying to track down the apes. Then serendipitously she sees a billboard advertising “Ape House” a new show coming to television. The apes in the show are her apes from the Great Ape Language Lab.  The entire world seems transfixed by sight of these apes living in a house using a computer to order food, toys and furniture; everyone that is but Isabel. She is both elated that the world is able to see the beauty and intelligence of these apes and their ability to communicate; however, she is also afraid that whoever is behind the show is not taking proper care of the apes.

Still trying to get to the bottom of where the apes are, Isabel reaches out to a reporter, John Thigpen, who once visited the lab. The matriarchal ape had trusted John, so Isabel feels she can trust him to.  Together with some friends, Isabel has found some interesting information about who was behind the explosion and wants to use it to get her family of apes back and into a suitable environment.  One day, Sam, one of the apes identifies using ASL that one of his caregivers is the one of the “bad stranger” kidnappers. The show’s producers immediately shut the show down. Can Isabel and John still save the apes before they are sold to an animal experimentation lab?

Summary:
David Beck and Elizabeth (Parker) Beck were childhood sweethearts; they met at summer camp at Lake Charmaine. Each year they celebrate the anniversary of their first kiss by returning to the summer camp and adding a notch to the tree where they first carved their initials so many years ago. On the night of their 13th kiss anniversary, their lives changed forever. That night, David was knocked unconscious and left for dead and Elizabeth was kidnapped, only to be found five days later, the victim of a serial killer.

Fast forward eight years, and a series of events leads David to question all he has known. Two bodies were recently discovered near the lake where David was assaulted and Elizabeth was kidnapped. The police suspect David may be involved in the murder of these two men, because his story about the night of Elizabeth’s disappearance just doesn’t add up. Earlier that same day, David receives an email that could have only come from Elizabeth. The coincidence is just too unnerving. Following the instructions in the email, David is taken to a website that links to a street-level camera, and for a brief second, he sees her – but it can’t be Elizabeth, can it?

With the help of his sister’s girlfriend, and an attorney, David attempts to fight the charges against him so that he can remain free to find out if Elizabeth is really still alive. His search pits him against the police, the FBI, and a couple of henchmen set on keeping him from learning the real truth.

Annotation/Flashtalk:
Crass at times, humorous always; Halpern recounts some of his dad’s most…well…let’s just say his dad’s advice, for example:

On My Interest in Skydiving
“You won’t go do that, I know it…Son, I used to wipe your ass, I know you better than you know you…Fine, Mom used to wipe it, but I was usually nearby.”

Summary:
What started as a bored and back-living-at-home, 28-year-old Justin’s posting on Twitter for the folly of his friends, turned into mega-following in less than a month.

Halpern has turned some of his funniest, if not fondest, childhood memories about some of life’s most unexpected lessons he learned though the expletive-laden wisdom of his father, into a hilarious set of short-stories punctuated by more of his father’s brutally honest wit.

The book has spawned a TV series of the same name, written by Halpern.

Publisher: Penguin Books; First PB Printing edition (September 1, 1996)

Annotation/Flashtalk:
Meet the Mossbachers, Delaney, Kyra, and Jordan.  They are healthy vegetarians and nature lovers who live in the LA suburbs.  Meet the Rincons, Candido and America. They are illegal immigrants eating out of trashcans and living in the valley behind the Mossbachers neighborhood. Only in Los Angeles can two families living in such close proximity live such different lives while trying to live the American Dream.

Summary:
T.C Boyle brings to literature the long-held, yet timely still, debate about illegal immigration in Southern California.  Boyle contrasts the typical suburban lives of the American-born Mossbachers to that of the immigrant Rincons working to scrape by getting work where they can find it, living in a makeshift camp in the valley behind the Mossbachers’ suburban neighborhood and the depths of desperation they will go to even eat.

Boyle uses walls and coyotes to symbolically further the debate of illegal immigration. He compares the effectiveness of walls for keeping out coyotes to that of the border keeping out illegal immigrants.  He also likens the coyotes’ desperation for survival to that of the illegal immigrants and their quest to survive doing every that is necessary to live and eat and survive in hopes of eventually getting the chance to live the American dream.

Much like the existing debate, there seems to be no easy answers and neighbors are pitted against neighbors in this controversial question.

NOTE: Seems like it would make a very good book discussion

Annotation/Flash talk:
I could not say it better than the author in his prologue:
“I'm not, by nature, a betting man. However, the pages that follow in this book do not bear testimony to that. In fact they exist wholly as the result of a bet.
I'm not, by nature, a drinking man. However, the making of the bet which led to this book does not bear testimony to that. Because I made it when I was pissed.
Everything you read from this moment forth is a tribute to what can be achieved as a result of a shabby night of booze.”

Summary:
On an earlier trip to Ireland, Tony Hawks spotted a man standing on the side of the road trying to hitchhike a ride with a refrigerator in tow.  The story became one of those classic back pocket stories he tossed out as banter at dinner parties with friends.  One night, one drunken night, the subject of the Fridge Man came up again.  Tony’s friends did not believe him.  Tony awoke the next morning to find a wager scribbled in his own hand, betting his friend £100 that Tony could not hitchhike around Ireland with fridge.

The gauntlet having been thrown, Tony did just that. He arrived in Ireland, was aided is picking up a small cube fridge and proceeded to spend the month of May trying to hitchhike a full circle around Ireland.  Aided some by promotion on a local radio show, Tony worked his way around Ireland, but not with the greatest of ease.

The fridge became to symbolize more than the bet; it became a philosophy for life and an in-road to the hearts, fellowship and minds of some of the most generous Irish people.  The story in a way is also a travelogue for the beauty of the Ireland.

Sometimes your past comes back to haunt you; sometimes thier stepfather do. And, sometimes, the best way to hurt you, is to hurt the ones you love instead. Find out who is tormenting Judas Coyne and why in "Heart-shaped Box" by Joe Hill.
Summary:
Judas Coyne is an aging rocker; aside from music, his two favorite passions are groupies and collecting the macabre. His collection of the macabre includes drawings by John Wayne Gacy, a 16th century skull, a three-hundred-year-old signed witch’s confession, Alistair Crowley’s chessboard, and a real snuff film (which even makes him uncomfortable, but he cannot, for some reason get rid of).

He collects groupies too, never making a real connection. No sense in bothering to learn their names; he simply called them by the state where he picked them up, “Georgia” and “Florida” were his latest. When the relationship gets to a point where they want too much from him, Judas sends them packing.

One day Judas receives an invitation to bid on something so special, even he can’t pass it up:

"Buy my stepfather’s ghost…Do not think this is a stunt or a practical joke…The winning bidder will have something solid to show for their investment. I will send you his Sunday suit. I believe if his spirit is attached to anything, it has to be that."

When the UPS man delivers the suit in the heart-shaped box…a suit was not all that came; indeed, the ghost of Craddock McDermott had come along too. However, it wasn’t until Judas was up late one night that he realized that he got all he purchased and more. There, in his Shaker rocking chair, sat the ghost of McDermott wearing the Sunday suit and in place of his eyes were dark black scribbles.

Judas sets off on a trip with Georgia and his two dogs Angus and Bon to find the suit’s owner and get her to take back the ghost and the suit.
